Harmison agrees new deal with Durham

Steve Harmison has committed his future to Durham by signing a new four-year contract which will tie him to his home county until 2013.

The 31-year-old fast bowler, who made his first class debut back in 1996, intends to help Durham become the first county since Yorkshire in 1966-1968 to win three successive championships.

The two time Ashes winner has taken over 400 first class wickets for Durham, including 50 last season, while he has claimed the wicket which clinched LV County Championship in both of Durham’s title wins in 2008 and 2009.

"I’ve always loved playing cricket for Durham and I’m incredibly proud to represent the club and to be part of the set up here." said Harmison. "I’m looking forward to the next four seasons, especially 2010 as we look to win the championship for a record third year."

Harmison, who finished last season with 679 first class wickets, can now set his sights on attempting to reach 1,000 victims before he ends an illustrious career which has also included 226 Test wickets.

Geoff Cook, Durham's head coach, said: "Stephen is a huge asset to our team, he has a great presence, both on the field and in the dressing room, and his commitment and dedication to the club has always been fantastic."

Durham are also keen on Harmison helping the development of some of their younger players with chief executive David Harker adding: "Stephen is a great performer for Durham and we are absolutely delighted that he will remain a major part of the team for the foreseeable future.

"Off the field we have a number of young players benefiting from his experience and guidance and that contribution cannot be underestimated."
